Double R Stables

News Letter

August 10th, 2008

Hello from our family to yours,

I guess you guys thought I had forgot you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Things at the stables have been extremely busy but it is time to take a timeout and fill you in on the doings.

Jennifer has been extremely busy with the gardens, canning, freezing,  Farmers Market and keeping Matt and I straight. I don't know what I would do without the support and love of her and Matt. I am blessed with a great family and I know it.

Matt has completed his job of painting the gates and panels that can be salvaged. There are a couple that need to be replaced because of rust. Not sure when we will tackle that because of the list of things that need to be finished before summer ends. The next job Matt and I will tackle is pulling the face boards off the four board fence, replacing the bad lumber with a trailer load of popular lumber I recently bought and painting all the four board fence. That will be our last big job before winter comes.

The the pasture next to the riding arena is ready to be occupied. It is a two acre pasture. Matt, Lee Durbin and I completed the fencing day before yesterday. It took two days to complete the bracing corners and stringing the high tensile wire. Also took about a two weeks to dig post holes, tamp and level. Sam's horses (Bella, Indy and Phinny) are going in the pasture today. The turn out stall isn't complete but they never use one anyway. They have won the competition for eating the most. They were awarded their trophy at a ceremony last Saturday. LeeAnna and Aaron's horses (Lady and April) lost by one flake of hay. It was a close and exciting race. All kidding aside, it was extremely hot and humid.

Speaking of hay, we have been feeding hay and forage extender for about three weeks because of the lack of rain. It has been another hot, dry and expensive summer. God finally smiled on us and sent some rain our way. Now, if it will just keep it up, we should be able to go back to straight pasture in about a week to ten days. So please pray, send karma of whatever to keep it up.

The quality of hay this year is excellent and we have most of our stores in the loft. I am awaiting one more shipment of square bales and will wait until winter arrives before accepting shipments of the round bales.

Jackie scratched her leg while kicking at another horse. She has a habit of doing that. Just a minor scratch but broke two lines of fencing in the process that had to be fixed and a leg that had to be doctered. She is such a loving horse to people but a dominate horse to other horses.

Speaking of loving horses, Barbie Smith has reached a hard decision about her late father's horse Pal. He is the foundered horse that stays in a stall/round pen area. She needs to find a good owner for him she will give him to them. I know this was a hard decision for her and my heart goes out to her. Pal is a Paso Fino palomino gelding about nine to ten years old. When he arrived here, he couldn't walk or run and had a growth on one eye. I have nursed him back to health, the growth is gone, he can be ridden, his coat is full and beautiful and he has a great disposition. Just a beautiful horse inside and out. The down side is the cost to keep him that way. I charge Barbie $200.00 a month for the special diet and care he needs to remain healthy and that is a break even for me financially. I cannot take less for his care. So, that said, if anyone wants this horse, contact Barbie or me. If you know of anyone that might be interested in a semi-retired loving horse contact us. I am a little hesitant to let him leave here with my recipe for his health as I am the one that developed it but if that is the only way, I will share it.

One last note. Jennifer needs the bios from each of you and a picture. So far, no one has responded to the request even though all were in favor of the idea. Come on folks, git er done. We are working on an early fall date for a cook out. More to follow. Sorry this was so lengthily but I didn't want you to think we weren't earning our money.

 Come see us,

 Richard, Jennifer and Matt
